Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
