Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
