Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying such treatments should be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have stopped the medication report a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
