The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard physical horror, but inside Together exists a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The story starts when the couple move from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple face the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
