As confusing as it is to observe the chief executive attempt to overturn the traditional concept of democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there is one large group among Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they transformed an image of affection into an icon of hostility who blesses specifically the brutality that he criticized in biblical teachings; this change developed at a slower pace, across decades instead of months, yet it remains disturbing through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold

Jesus' answer to violence is to offer the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a means to teach the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing states that when someone steals your outer garment you must offer the person your additional clothing also.
The apparent and direct truth that Christ of the gospels advocates for a kind of extreme compassion concentrated on the needy has perpetually caused Christianity rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the general public, but because of its intrinsic extremism requiring to be controlled. During the 1950s it was contained by dilution – Protestantism was so widespread that it practically baptized the status quo.
A Conflict for the Best of Us
