Approximately fifty automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Law enforcement say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then discovered many other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests suggest the substance was probably human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; officials are not yet cognizant of any harm in connection with the event," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for details.
A high-ranking official said the vandalism rendered him without words and required to be solved quickly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he wrote on a platform, referring to the murder of nine victims by a gunman focusing on residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
